Muslimat Collective (MC) was founded in 2017 in Houston, TX. It was started from an idea that Muslim women needed more opportunities for social gatherings outside of weddings and baby showers. It was founded by a group of women who had a desire to create opportunities for Muslim women to socialize and get to know one another in a comfortable and fun environment. We wanted to create events that, while not exclusively for Muslim women, would cater to the specific needs of Muslim women in public, social spaces. We intended our events to be experiences that were executed at a professional high level where attendees felt special and specifically catered to. Muslim women in the US don’t have many options for public gatherings that allow us to adhere to our Islamic principles while having a fun time. MC was created to address this issue. We also have a strong desire to give back to our community and to support projects or organizations that serve a community benefit.
From these desires, the Beyond the Veil (BTV) Fashion Showcase was born. The 2017 showcase was an amazing success. It brought together a diverse group of 250+ women (Muslim and other faith traditions) from all over Houston and surrounding cities. There was fashion, shopping, food, and much socializing. It also raised $10,000 for a worthy cause.
MC’s mission is to cultivate a sisterhood, through cultural exchange (e.g., fashion, arts, entertainment) and interfaith engagement. We strive to promote the understanding and celebration of diversity in its many expressions and support charitable causes that promote community development and engagement. The 1st BTV aligned well with this mission. We intend to build on the successes of our inaugural event to continue to bring social gathering opportunities for women to our community.
